Why do you think Edward cannot read Bella's mind or hear what she is thinking?

Because her shields are up. She's protecting herself... That's what I think.

Uhm, has no one read Breaking Dawn yet?
SPOLIER ALERT!
She does have a shield, which she can control. She is able to remove it so that he can listen in on her thoughts. That doesn't happen till Breaking Dawn though.

Another question, why does Bella have to be portrayed as a feeble and clumsy girl? Why couldn't she have been strong and independent? She took care of her mother so well, I just didn't get at times why she was so, uhm.. what's the word.. weak?

I think its also to show the difference between the way she was and the way she will be after the change. She was very clumsy and even though she took really good care of her mom she had her faults too. She can't be completely perfect unless she was a vampire. I also think thats one of the reasons why Edward loved her so much!

Edward can't read Bella's mind because, as the author has said, she has a very "private" mind. Basically the shield thing. I agree that Bella is a weak character to make her easier to relate to. I would also guess, she might just be weak when it comes to Edward. Let's be honest, she's a teenage and teenagers are notoriously weak-willed--blind, even--when it comes to relationships, which were a relatively new aspect to Bella's life.

I understand she is trying to be portrayed as someone to relate to, but I always hated the fact that she was supposedly so weak.

Do you have to make her so clumsy?? I mean, it was funny at some times, but it almost gets her killed a couple of times..... That wouldn't be funny if it were me....

I think the "weak" was a reference more to her personality than her clumsiness. And when her clumsiness gets her in trouble, well, that's just good story-telling. What's a story without the conflict?

Well, I think it just makes for the fact that there are TOO many conflicts. Her weakness, Edward's reluctance to change her, Jacob's secret love, etc.....
I just think it's WAY too busy.......

That's what makes the books so popular. Fans get to say "No! That wasn't supposed to happen! How could you, Stephenie Meyer!" I frequently yell at good books for such reasons.
