Honesly, this book nearly made me "cut" this series. I love Mercy, but the RAPE storyline was botched so badly. If Bone Crossed hadn't made up for it...

I was so shocked when that happened....I couldn't believe that that even came out like that!

At first I went back and re-read that part because I thought I was mistaken. I was like "Were the heck did that come from?"

Wow, , I must have completly missed something here. I didn't think the ... that story line was botched. What didn't you like about it? What bothered you so much that it made you want to drop the series?

What bothered you so much that it made you want to drop the series? I truly love the Mercy Thompson Series... But Mercy's rape really sucked. I don't mind sex in books. I have read books with crazy sex scenes and I don't mind them, but rape is a very delicate subject. I really think that the book could have done with out it. I don't like how it was done and that it was done.

Exactly. The rape wasn't all that well done. And it is a touchy subject--one that I often get frustrated with. Iron Kissed ends on the very wrong note of Mercy trying to lose the pain of the rape in Adam's arms with consensual sexy times. That's a trope commonly used and GRATED my nerves that I thought Patricia Briggs was using it. It's only in Bone Crossed that Briggs redeems herself somewhat by having Adam recognize Mercy's need to heal and then devoting the rest of the book to Mercy finding herself again.

well, rape is rape... but it's happened! every reaction we make to what we read is always attached to our own emotions, it's well written and Mercy had definitely a normal reaction to what happened to her ;D

Right and I'm not saying that people don't react differently. What I have a problem with is using a trope that is really not true to life (true love heals all pain!) being used. But as I also said, I think Briggs veers away from the trope with Bone Crossed. So really, my qualm is with how Iron Kissed leads us to believe that Briggs will be relying on the trope/

ok, i see your problem now, but like yelf said the rape happened. I personally thought it was very well written. Also I didn't see the "all is healed by true love" thing at the end of the book what I saw was Mercy desperatly grabbing at straws and knowing that somehow Adam would be able to help her over come what had happened, but she had thought that it took them mating, so she was so desperate that she was willing to try anything in that moment. also Ivy, you asked "where the heck did that come from" when you read about it, but I guess I saw it coming just from the way he was treating her before. I just knew it would end badely adn I figured he'd try, not that he'd sucede, but then again I didn't think of him using the fae cup to make her comply.

I would not have ever seen rape coming in that story. I remember thinking that she would be kidnapped and hurt, but never rape. I thought...how do you go from no sex scenes in previous books to rape? It took me by surprise because I personally did not think that Patricia would write about it. Like I said before, I love the Mercy Series. However I think we could have done with out the rape scene. I truly believe that there was no room in this series for that to happen, to such a strong female character. I know stuff like this happens in real life every day. But this was Mercy. I feel her character did not deserve it. This is just my opinion

well. nobody deserves it. But i think that was in someways the point, it can even happen to strong people like Mercy. There is no discrimination. Weak and strong alike have to heal, and in their own time.

ok.... I can see everyone's point here. Yes I think the she could have done without the Rape however, I do see why she went there. I don't think it ruined the series but I don't think it was necessary eitehr. I see why she did it. My opinion is the reason she did it was to show that Mercy wasn't invincible. That she could be hurt. That she was a person and not just a kick-ass coyote. That she had feelings and needed Adam. She realized that she could trust Adam and needed him to help her get through it. That's the reason why I saw her cling to him. She's stronger and less vulnerable now. Could all this be achieved another way? Yes but I see why she chose this route. So needless to say I'm neutral, lol.
