Author of great series "A Song of Ice and Fire". There's a bit of everything there - fallen dynasty, magic and prophecy, mounted knights wearing plate armour, exotic nomads,... Martin moves the point of view around between over a dozen characters (children or teenagers providing some of them, but the series is written for adults). New readers should really hang on till the series is complete before starting it - or join in the wait of 5 (FIVE) years between books n°3 and 4, and there are 2 more to come. www.georgerrmartin.com/

I love this series, but I feel almost guilty whenever I recommend it, because I'm starting to doubt that Martin will ever finish it. :/

I am hanging on until it's finished. Cos I do hate waiting. But I did read one or two, I can't remember anymore cos I got so upset at him for killing everyone

I sort of enjoyed that everyone dies. ; It makes everything so unexpected and scary. ...Then again my favorite character is still alive at the moment...

I would ask which was your favorite, but I suppose that would be a spoiler for anyone who hasn't read...

About my favorite characters: Jaime has always been my favorite. I was utterly heart-broken when he lost his hand. But, he's still alive--so I shouldn't complain. I also had a soft spot for Ned, Arya, and Robb. Ned and Robb have died (and fairly early in the story) and Arya is getting a bit whiny for my tastes... So I cling to Jaime.

Aha, I see, not a big fan of that person I guess I liked Ned, and then people started dying and I just felt he would just end up killing more and more. Not to mention I can not stand Daenyrys

You hate my favorite! But how? He's just so damaged--and it's heartbreaking that he ends up being a pawn rather than player... Ned is being played by Sean Bean in the TV mini series/movie thing. *licks lips*

Well, I think half the point of Martin's books is that everyone has flaws. Some are just worse and some are more honest about it. Take, for example: Ned's wife, Catelyn. She seems fairly much like a good woman, but she ostracizes Jon and later turns into a vengeful spirit that won't listen to those she once trusted.
Or Arya, the young girl who wishes she had been born a boy. Later in the story she is told point-blank that her troubles are mostly her own fault.
Now Jaime. Jaime begins by seeming utterly horrible. For God's sake, he has an incestuous relationship with his twin and killed the previous king with the trust that king had for him. But later, all this begins to unravel: he's really his sister's pawn, he killed the king but bears immense guilt, loses his hand (and thus, his identity as a fantastic swordsman), and he begins to care for someone who is ugly and slow.

Hm perhaps I could like Jaime if I get over the icky stuff. Good to know

Well, he does have a lot of 'icky' stuff to overcome, that's for sure. But again, I find it really interesting that all the characters that immediately seem sympathetic usually have their dark sides revealed later and characters that seem evil slowly become more humanized. Exceptions: Jon and Cersei.

Oh yes that he sure has, but hey if I approach him with a very very very open mind and think that I might come to like him
Hm really, well then I really must think about who I like. How about Daenyrys then?
